Terell Stafford Quintet Celebrates Lee Morgan: Jazz Up Close Series

Saturday, February 2, 2012, Perelman Theater - Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, PA

Terrell Stafford Quintet continues the Kimmel Center's 2011/12 Jazz Up Close Series, which honors Philadelphia jazz legends, with a tribute to Philadelphia born, legendary trumpeter composer and arranger Lee Morgan, Saturday, February 25 in Perelman Theater and the Kimmel Center.
The Quintet featured some of the world’s outstanding musicians: trumpeter-extraordinaire Terrell Stafford; with Tim Warfield, tenor saxophone; Bruce Barth, piano; Dana Hall, drums; and Peter Washington on bass. The Quintet performed a bebop-infused program of selected works from Lee Morgan’s catalog of music, as well as works from Terell Stafford's latest release, “This Side of Strayhorn.”

Stafford shared with the audience that Lee Morgan’s music always had the “element of dance – the element of feeling good and exuberant.” The Quintet took a fresh look at Morgan’s music, maintaining the original moods, yet adding their own dynamic contrasts. Tunes included a swinging resolve of Morgan’s "Hocus Pocus", “Yes I Can, No I Can’t," “Stop Start and "Side Winder." Also stunning rhythmic versions of Art Blakey’s “Petty Larceny’ and “Yama" featuring Lee Morgan on the original compositions. The rhythm section of Warfield, Barth, Washington and Hall provide excellent support and fine solos throughout the performance
Terell Stafford currently serves as Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University. Strafford’s students from Temple University's Jazz Studies program performed on the Commonwealth Plaza stage from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. as part of the Kimmel Center's Live from the Plaza Stage free concert series.
