Is Bobby Timmons our all time favorite pianist? Well, if he's not, he's pretty darn near the top of the list! This sweet early side for Riverside finds him in his usual trio format, backed up by an agile rhythm section, Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb, and serving up the hard swinging, soulful bop we love him for. Eight numbers in all, including three of his own, "Easy Does It", " A Little Busy" and "I Thought About You", a few standards and some modern numbers like "If You Could See Me Now", and "Groovin High". © 1996-2012, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
Review by Scott Yanow
Pianist Bobby Timmons, who became famous for his funky originals and soulful playing, mostly sticks to more bop-oriented jazz on this trio set with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Jimmy Cobb. He provides three originals (none of which really caught on) and is in excellent form on five standards, with highlights including "Old Devil Moon," "I Thought About You," and "Groovin' High." The Riverside does show that Timmons was a bit more versatile than his stereotype; in any case, the music is excellent.
