Paquito D’Rivera Among Latin Grammy Winners Corea, Clarke & White also honored The Latin Recording Academy handed out the 12th annual Latin Grammy Awards on Nov. 10 in Las Vegas, and iconic jazz artists were among the winners. Paquito D’Rivera’s Panamericana Suite (MCG Jazz) garnered two awards, winning Best Latin Jazz Album and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. In the Best Latin Jazz Album category, D’Rivera competed against himself to some extent. His quintet received a nomination for Clazz (Cargo Music), the live album that D’Rivera recorded with pianist Pepe Rivero in Barcelona. D’Rivera’s upcoming concert performances include a couple of New York City dates: the Players Club (Dec. 2) and the Roseland Ballroom (Dec. 4). In other Latin Grammy wins, the Concord Jazz two-CD set Forever by Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White was named Best Instrumental Album. Other nominees in the category included Omar Sosa, Al Di Meola, Escalandrum and Luis Salinas. The evening’s biggest winner was Puerto Rican hip-hop duo Calle 13, who set a record by taking home nine awards, bringing their total career wins to 19. The Best Salsa Album statuette went to Rubén Blades y Seis del Solar for Todos Vuelven Live Vol. 1 y 2 (Ariel Rivas Music). Colombian pop singer Shakira, who was honored as the person of the year, performed two songs during the three-hour, Latin Grammy telecast from Mandalay Bay Events Center.
