Any who might doubt Tristano's ability to outswing any of the regular bebop pianists should lend an ear to the astonishing solo on the first piece, his favourite Lennie's Pennies. Another outstanding piano solo, in You go to my Head, is preceded by the interweaving of the two saxes and followed at the end by Konitz' alto. The beginning of  317... reveals the Out of Nowhere parentage, but soon the pianist departs from the key, and the three front musicians build the new tune; as it happens with April... and the final two themes. (I can tell where Back Home does come from, but Sound-Lee still escapes my ears) Throughout, the group work with uncanny accord, improvisations moving seamlessly from one man to the next, yet set within a palpable groove by Ind (though he's nearly inaudible) and Levitt.

One of the best performances of this matchless line-up.
