Barry Harris has been a respected elder statesman and a mentor to younger jazz musicians for so long that it almost seems as if he has always been on the scene. Nevertheless, there was a time when Harris was just starting out: in 1960 he left his native Detroit to briefly join Cannonball Adderley, made one live trio album for Riverside with that band's rhythm section, and not long afterwards recorded Preminado, his first studio date for the label. His basic style seems already set: something of Art Tatum and Bud Powell plus a lot of his own verve and sensitivity--but one surprise may be the uncharacteristically subdued, quite supportive trio drumming of Elvin Jones, taking care of business for his hometown friend.

Review by Scott Yanow
This Riverside LP features the great bop pianist Barry Harris in a trio with bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Elvin Jones. Jones in particular pushes the pianist, and this fine set has many strong moments, including strong versions of "My Heart Stood Still," Harris' original title cut and "What Is This Thing Called Love"; in addition, Barry Harris takes "I Should Care" as an unaccompanied solo.
